Medicine Lake is a great spot to stop on the drive to Maligne Lake. There are walking trails around the lake that we love to use as a nice quiet spot to stop while were in Jasper and just looking to take in the views rather than hike or snowshoe a long distance. The mountains in this area are some of the most beautiful in the rockies and if you’re lucky you will spot the eagle that has called this area home for many years, the goat families that live in the nearby hills and often get a drink from this lake or the family of bears that can sometimes be seen crossing over from the alpine to the waters edge. The area was touched by forest fire not long ago and the burnt old growth is still obvious but don’t let that fool you, this area is beaming with life in the forest and a lovely spot to stop or even spend the entire day. There is an easy 5 km hike behind the lake that is fairly private for exploring during your stop as well. As always, details and up to date info on the hike can be found on All Trails.
Maligne Canyon is not far down the road and has a lovely restaurant (Maligne Canyon Wilderness Kitchen) that you can stop and enjoy lunch and accommodations aren’t far in the town of Jasper, at the Jasper Park Lodge or at the Snaring River Campground.
